Tis (almost) the season to be jolly …

twinkly lights

The last six months have been simply amazing – lots of new people to meet, work to see and customers to please. We are now a group of twenty two makers and new enquiries continue to come in from people wanting space in the Gallery.

Below are a few more views of our lovely space, hope to see you there over the next few weeks – we are now almost full to the rafters with plenty of interesting, handmade, local work to tempt you … see you soon …

At Summers End …

some welcome publicity

Summer is slowly turning and what a summer it has been … We have had more new makers join the Gallery and our visitor footfall has been overwhelming. To the left of this text is an updated snippet of the amazing publicity we get from the owners of Broadwindsor Craft Centre, out in last weeks local press … There was also a special “OPEN DAY” (photo’s below) over the August Bank Holiday that proved very successful plus more landscaping and signage planned for the Autumn.

Our new makers in the Gallery encompass an expanded range of craft disciplines, we now have FOLKSY FIGURINES from Kate Bartholomew. SHIBORI DYEING from Jayne Burton and some new WOODTURNING from Terry Webb, plus other established makers for you to come and see. Work on the WEBSITE is an ongoing process, please do wander around our updated WORKSHOPS and MAKERS pages, using either the links here or navigating through the titles in the header menu.

It is so great to be involved in the regenration of the Craft Centre. The turn of the seasons is a busy and exciting time, there is always something that needs attention, displays to re-organise, new makers to nurture, websites and mailings to update … and that’s without the time needed for finishing my own ‘creative makes’ for sale … I promised myself I wouldn’t mention the “C” word in this months post … but realistically it’s only hiding just around the corner, so keep an eye out for ongoing advertising and come and visit for a guaranteed engaging experience …

Settling In …

Demonstration Day

We are settling into our new surroundings at gallery of Makers. The last three months have been busy, busy, busy – with tons of customers in our light and airy, inspiring Gallery space.

New Makers have come to join us as well Pippa Hill, Samantha Dodd and Squirrell Bindery and Press, amongst others have all joined the group, adding to our varied and original works for sale.

There was a paper making demonstration at the beginning of August, this proved to be a popular addition to our activities and Clare Colby who not only runs Gallery of Makers but also promotes the “AMAZING POWERS of PAPER” is always happy to discuss both one to one, and larger group workshops, imparting her passion for paper to anyone who would like to try a new creative challenge …

Saturday August 25th will be a special Day at Broadwindsor Craft Centre – MID SUMMER OPEN DAY – A day to celebrate at the Craft Centre, there will be demonstrations (including PAPER MAKING at GALLERY OF MAKERS) going on throughout the day, with a BBQ, live music a bouncy castle and kids activities from 4pm.

Gallery of Makers is quickly becoming the place to come and find something special, a gift for a friend or a treat for yourself and the new surrondings at Broadwindsor Craft Centre create a fantastic destination for a morning or afternoon outing in the countrysiden (not forgetting the draw of all those mouthwatering cakes in the restaurant) …

Gallery of Makers is very pleased to be able to support the work of an expanding group of local Artists, Makers and Craftsmen. If you would like to sign up to monthly updates about the Galleries activities and Clare’s work with ALL THINGS PAPER, please follow the link below …

interesting view out in our Gallery Update

Now bringing you our first GALLERY UPDATE. The last couple of months have been a roller coaster of packing, unpacking, picture hanging, 3D display, flatpack carnage and lots and lots of coffee. Gallery of Makers is now “Up and Running” in a light and airy new build, within the Broadwindsor Craft Centre (BCC) Complex.

Our MAKERS PAGES on this website show details of current makers work. Each Maker working with different materials using techniques and processes, mastered over their careers in making. Sometimes we are looking for new makers to join our group, please get in touch through the contact page on this website, if you think your work may fit in with the group. As well as the beautiful work on show in our Gallery, “WORKSHOPS” are now available on a regular basis in BCC’s new education room (more on this will follow in the next Gallery Update).

new face(s)

We now have a good core group exhibiting within the gallery, Our Gallery Update featured image includes new work for sale from “wild plant papers” and “charlie collis” designs. the new  PAPER CORNER … is ‘not to be sneezed at …’ PAPER IS AMAZING and completely under valued in the opinion of GALLERY OF MAKERS owner CLARE COLBY “I’ve decided to make the plight of this underestimated and valuable resource known to all, in my quest to BIG UP PAPER WORK !!!

As you may have noticed (right in the centre of) the featured image above, evidence that a lot of work including new pathways and underground electric cables, has been going on outside the Gallery. – There is more work planned to make the courtyard between the Gallery and restaurant more enjoyable, with talk of BBQ’s and music on special open days …

Time for me to log out now and go on the hunt for a very particular type of ‘screw’ (who’d have thought there could be so many) … it doesn’t matter how big your toolbox, there’s always something else that could be added …

There are some exciting new changes including Gallery of Makers happening at Broadwindsor Craft Centre. Situated in the rural heartland of West Dorset the craft centre was opened over 25 years ago, a re-development of redundant agricultural buildings.

Broadwindsor Craft Centre has a dedicated visitor base, often referred to as “Dorsets Best Kept Secret“. The centre is now undergoing a major facelift with a stunning new restaurant “Staddle Stones” already wowing the crowds.

One of the first arrivals in the newly built studio’s, at the back of the Restaurant is the Gallery of Makers (formerly The Attic Gallery). Now being run by Clare Colby Gallery of Makers will be in a new, more accessible downstairs location. Helping visitors in their quest to find that perfect handmade item, either for themselves or as a gift. The new studio’s will also be home to an education room. Some of the Gallery of Makers artists and craftsmen will be running engaging and informative workshops here. More details on the Workshop Diary at the top of this page.

Clare Colby has had connections with Broadwindsor Craft Centre since the early 1990’s. Clare says “… this is such a perfect opportunity. Little did I know all those years ago when I drove my boss (Greeting Card Publisher), to Broadwindsor. For a meeting with Terry Whitworth (Illustrator). That some years later I would meet my husband, move to West Dorset, have a family and continue, not only my own work with paper but also take on the management of Gallery of Makers, in an area I love …”

Twelve Artists and Craftsmen from the Attic Gallery will be moving downstairs to Gallery of Makers. You can find out more about them by clicking on the Makers heading in the menu above. The move will take place over the first May Bank Holiday and the doors will be open from Tuesday to Sunday every week.
